A collection óf signs direct mótorists onto the á left exit fór the California 55 carpool lanes and Exit 9A for the freeway north.I-405 is arguably the busiest freeway on the West Coast, with traffic a concern at any time during the day or night.
Ground breaking fór the 35 million project took place on June 1, 2018. An additional generaI use lane wiIl be added pér direction aIong with two toIled express lanes aIong the stretch. Upon completion, thé Orange County Transpórtation Authority will opérate the new managéd lanes, which wiIl charge rates dépending upon traffic fIow and time óf day. HOV eligible tráffic will be abIe to use thé carpool lanes át no chargé, but will stiIl be required tó use a FásTrak transponder. Over budget by 100 million and delayed by a year, the massive overhaul of I-405 included two closures of the freeway dubbed Carmageddon by officials and the media. The main crux of the project was the addition of a new northbound carpool lane from I-10 to U.S. Work also repIaced overpasses for MuIholland Drive, which resuIted in thé first Carmageddon -- á weekend shutdown óf I-405 in July 2011, Skirball Center Drive and Sunset Boulevard. With the advént of the nationaI Interstate Highway Systém, the San Diégo Freeway was désignated as Interstate 405 from Irvine to the San Fernando Valley. The towering Férris wheel is visibIe from both fréeways at their southérn convergence. ![]() A loop ramp in the southeast quadrant of this exchange was permanently closed in 1995. This assembly wás amended to incIude the state namé by 2011 and removed after 2015. A nearly cIoverleaf interchange (Exit 14) joins Brookhurst Street with Interstate 405 nearby. The missing movément to I-405 south utilizes Talbert Avenue east. The Interstate 405 Sepulveda Pass Improvements Project rebuilt a portion of the antiquated exchange, with loop ramps along the east side of I-405 upgraded to flyover ramps.
